Patullo Bridge/Qiqyet Foreshore Marsh: Modelling Potential Impacts of Sea-Level Rise on Fish Habitat Offsets (2020-2021)
The Modelling Potential Impacts of Sea-Level Rise on Fish Habitat Offsets project examines the effects of climate change on the proposed Qiqéyt Foreshore compensation site for the Pattullo Bridge replacement. The proposed compensation site is located on the former village site of Qiqéyt, which is of great cultural and spiritual significance for the six First Nations of FNFLF.
While most offsetting projects incorporate some resiliency to changing conditions, very few look as far ahead as the end of the century. This study opens up a discussion around resiliency and productivity of these wetlands over the lifespan of the projects that they are offsetting. Not only does this project bring a better understanding of how climate change may impact a site of cultural significance, it also furthers our collective knowledge on how to build a more resilient ecosystem that lasts for generations to come.
This project was carried out in partnership with the Ecological Restoration Master of Science program at Simon Fraser University and the British Columbia Institute of Technology. The project was completed in April 2021.
